MADURAI: A special court in Tirunelveli Thursday awarded death penalty to four people and life sentences to seven others for murder of three dalits in Tenkasi district in 2014.
K Murugan, 40, and R Venugopal, 42, dalits and natives of Udaippankulam village, were working in Coimbatore. After attending a wedding, Murugan's brother Kaliraj was taking both of them on a two-wheeler when a gang belonging to an intermediate caste intercepted the trio and murdered them due to enmity. Police arrested all involved and booked them for offences under IPC and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
After investigation, police filed chargesheet. Three of them had died during trial. On Sept 24, the special court convicted 11 people.
