BBC Strictly pays tribute to Dame Maggie Smith with Harry Potter dance for movie night

BBC's Strictly Come Dancing has paid a touching tribute to Dame Maggie Smith during movie week.

Maggie Smith died on September 27 and was known for her iconic roles on the West End, Downtown Abbey and as Professor McGonagall in .

She was 89 years' old and died in London with her sons by her side.

As a touching nod to the late Dame, Sarah Hadland and Strictly pro Vito Coppola danced the Viennese Waltz to Hedwig's theme.

In pre-dance footage, the actress said that it was a honour to be able to play Professor McGonagall for the dance.

Sarah, who is famous for her role in Miranda, said: "I've always absolutely idolised Maggie Smith because she was arguably one of the best actors ever."

The duo received a standing ovation plus praise from the four Strictly judges.

On , Harry Potter fans shared their support for the couple.

One said: "Please tell me why I'm properly crying at #Strictly with Sarah dressed as McGonagall, and raising her wand at the end. Maggie Smith was like a mum to all of us Potterheads."

The Strictly couples are given a theme each week and movie week also included George of the Jungle, Wayne's World and Dreamgirls.
