Blaze breaks out at Liverpool nightclub as six fire engines rush to scene

Send Push

A fire erupted at a Liverpool city centre nightclub this afternoon. Six fire engines surrounded the building, which houses Elysium nightclub and was formerly Garlands, on Eberle Street on Friday, September 13.

Firefighters were seen entering through the entrance of Elysium to combat the blaze. Merseyside Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene at 3.36pm with an aerial appliance also present.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a fire in the roof space of the three-storey building.

Four firefighters, equipped with breathing apparatus, battled the fire from inside using two hose reel jets, while an external main jet was also utilised. Eberle Street was cordoned off as fire crews worked at the scene.

Several car parks on Tempest Hey were blocked by fire engines, trapping vehicles, reports the Liverpool Echo.

One man, whose car was stuck at the scene, told the ECHO: "I don't know what I'll do. They could be there hours."

"So much for getting home tonight."

Car park staff took photographs of vehicle registration plates to ensure owners wouldn't be fined.

Local residents and businesses were advised to keep their windows and doors closed. Flames and smoke were seen billowing from the building as people were instructed to steer clear of the area.

Firefighters were overheard informing a man at the scene about potential water damage due to the "used an awful lot of water" used. A drone was deployed as crews sprayed water on the site from various angles.

A fireman at the scene confirmed to the ECHO around 6pm that the flames had been extinguished, but water was still being sprayed onto the building from hoses to "make sure" no remaining embers could reignite the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed.
