Donald Trump surprised his booing fans as he appeared to praise rival Kamala Harris for her kindness following the recent 'assassination' attempt at his Mar-a-Lago golf course.

Speaking at a Town Hall in Flint, Michigan, Trump recounted being contacted by both outgoing President Joe Biden and Democrat candidate Kamala Harris after the incident, noting, through boos from his MAGA devotees, that Harris "could not have been nicer" to him. His fans did not seem to appreciate Trump's rare moment of diplomacy and loudly booed the mention of Harris's name.

The former president, who narrowly escaped an attack at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, shared his experience of the event from his point of view.

Trump, aged 78, detailed how he was out golfing with his friend Steve Witkoff when "four to five gunshots" were heard, leading to Secret Service agents swiftly "grabbing" him. He described the situation as "quite something" but reassured that "but it all worked out well".

"I was playing golf with some of my friends on a Sunday morning and very peaceful, very beautiful weather... and all of a sudden we heard shots being fired in the air, and I guess probably four or five, and it sounded like bullets," Trump explained during a social media event hosted by X. He continued, "The Secret Service knew immediately it was bullets, and they grabbed me... everybody just got into the [golf] carts, and we moved along."

At the event, Trump commended the performance of his security detail, stating they did an "excellent job". Despite the gravity of the situation, the former president humorously expressed regret over not being able to finish the golf game with Witkoff, reports the Mirror US.

He said: "There was no question that we were off that course. I would have loved to have sank that last putt, but we decided [to] get out of [there]."

Trump also mentioned that he spoke with President Biden following the incident, saying: "He was very nice that he called up to make sure that I was OK," and that Biden asked if he "needed more people on my detail."

Biden later confirmed this, telling the press that the Secret Service "needs more help." He also expressed relief that Trump was "ok."

The police are still investigating the attempted assassination, but have identified 58 year old Ryan Routh from North Carolina as the suspect who aimed an assault rifle at the former president during his game.

After Secret Service agents opened fire, Routh allegedly fled the scene and attempted to speed away in a black Nissan. However, a witness managed to get the licence plate number, helping the police track him down.
