Donald Trump angered Detroit residents in a speech there by claiming that the whole of the US would end up like the city if he loses next month’s presidential election.

Painting a picture of the nation if his Democrat rival Kamala Harris wins on November 5, he said: “The whole country will be like – you want to know the truth? –it’ll be like Detroit.” The Republican ex-president added to a shocked crowd at the Detroit Economic Club: “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president.”

Democrat Mayor Mike Duggan was stung into defending the battling Michigan city, praising its recent drop in crime and growing population. He blasted: “Lots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump’s help.”

Referring to Trump’s efforts to win Michigan, the state’s Attorney General Dana Nessel said: “This guy is calling us ugly and then asking us out on a date.”

Speech attendee Judy Moenck, 68, said of Trump’s apparent insult: “I don’t think it was intentional.” But even she conceded: “Detroiters will probably feel a little hurt.” Local Trump spokeswoman Victoria LaCivita claimed: “His policies will usher in a new era of economic success and stability for Detroit.”
