Jamie Carragher sends message to Trent Alexander-Arnold amid Liverpool contract talks

Trent Alexander-Arnold is yet to commit his future to Liverpool despite claiming he wants to captain the club one day, leaving fans concerned he could leave following the expiry of his contract next summer.

Alexander-Arnold, 25, has been at Liverpool since the age of six but was given his first-team debut by former head coach Jurgen Klopp in October 2016. Since then the defender has become a crucial player at Liverpool and is considered one of the best right-backs in world soccer.

Some fans have expressed concerns that Klopp's decision to leave Liverpool at the end of last season may lead to repercussions in the squad, with Alexander-Arnold adapting to major changes for the first time since becoming a senior professional. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is desperate for Alexander-Arnold to sign a contract extension and has explained why he should "embrace" change as a local player.

Carragher played under six managers during his 17-year Liverpool career and explained during an exclusive interview with Liverpool.com how it could benefit the 25-year-old. "I enjoyed it. I had to adapt. I went from sort of the boot room to a Frenchman in Gerard Houlier coming in," Carragher said.

  • "He was part of France winning the World Cup. He was the technical director. He wasn't even coming in as a manager in his previous job. I don't think he'd been a manager for a few years, so the club took the plunge to go in a completely different direction.

"I embraced it. I embraced every change and I just thought it was a great chance and opportunity for me to learn. And I always seemed to do pretty well. As soon as a new manager came in, Gerard Houlier took a real shine to me, the same with Rafa Benitez.

"So I saw it as an opportunity. To be honest, as a local player, and I don't know if Trent thinks like this or thinks the same as me, I didn't really have a bond with the manager as much as other players did. It might be different with Trent, I suppose, because he had Jurgen Klopp for such a long time. I only had (Roy) Evans for like a couple of years."

Carragher was handed his Liverpool debut by Roy Evans in January 1997, and went on to play under Houlier (1998-2004), Benitez (2004-2010), Roy Hodgson (2010-2011), Kenny Dalglish (2011-2012), and finally Brendan Rodgers before retiring in May 2014. The Liverpool legend feels as though playing for the club he adored over any manager helped him as a professional.

"When people say to me 'Playing for the manager' I never played for any manager. I played for the club," Carragher added. "That's the way I saw it, especially as a local player, I've been at the club since I was nine years of age. So whoever the manager was, I was still gonna give it everything.

"It wasn't a case of, you know, the manager would ever lose me. He probably never had me. I went out every week, every day on the training pitch to give my best for Liverpool Football Club as a local player. So it didn't really affect me too much, managerial changes. I just always wanted what was best for the club."

Alexander-Arnold isn't the only player nearing the end of his deal, as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are also out of contract next summer. Due to his age, Alexander-Arnold is the priority, but the defender has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

When responding to questions about his contract situation, Alexander-Arnold has stressed that he prefers to keep personal details private. The lack of update has made fans uncomfortable, including Carragher, but Alexander-Arnold did hint that the delay in negotiations isn't on him.

"I have always said I want to captain the club," Alexander-Arnold said. "That is a goal of mine, whether that happens is out of my hands. "I want to be a Liverpool player this season [minimum] is what I will say."
