Man Utd AXE 250 staff under radical plans - but one department won't be affected

Manchester United are axing 250 of their staff under radical cost-cutting plans by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The job losses – around a quarter of United's total workforce - are being made after a review of every aspect of the club revealed significant savings needed to be made. Staff were informed of the impending redundancies at meetings on Wednesday, with the explanation that employment costs had risen to a level where they were not reflective of the current performance level of the first-team.

United finished in eighth place last season, their worst-ever Premier League finish, with the hope the millions saved from the redundancies can be ploughed back into improving Erik ten Hag's under-performing squad.

The cuts will affect every department and level of the club - with the exception of the Manchester United Foundation – and are designed to eradicate “non-essential” activities to save money.

Ratcliffe, who spent £1.3billion on a 28.8 per cent stake in United, giving him control of football operations, conducted a thorough audit of the club when he took charge. One of the major findings from the review was that United had more staff than was needed to be successful, with the solution a club-wide redundancy programme to streamline certain roles.

United have now embarked on a formal process to propose redundancies and a period of consultation with those members of staff affected. Club sources have indicated that alternative measures were considered, but the feeling was they would only have a short-term impact on overall performance level.

It was therefore decided that the job losses were the only way to achieve a long-term sustainable solution to give United the best possible chance of future success.

Financial constraints imposed as a result of the Premier League’s controversial Profit and Sustainability rules are also understood to have played a part in United's decision to axe so many roles.
