Roy Keane agrees with two ex-Arsenal stars over Leandro Trossard red card

Roy Keane and his fellow Sky Sports pundits were in agreement that Leandro Trossard fully deserved to be sent off against Manchester City.

The Arsenal forward, 27, was stunned after referee Michael Oliver showed him a second yellow card for booting the ball away to prevent City from taking a quick free-kick.

His dismissal came just minutes after Gabriel had headed the Gunners into a 2-1 lead on the stroke of half-time and left Mikel Arteta's side up against it for the entire second half. Their resistance finally gave out in the 98th minute when John Stones struck to pinch a point for the hosts.

In his post-match interview, Arteta refused to condemn Trossard for leaving his team-mates high and dry and instead pointed out a similar incident that saw City winger Jeremy Doku go unpunished.

Former Arsenal stars Paul Merson and Theo Walcott were alongside Keane and Micah Richards to provide analysis for the match - and they were in no doubt that the Belgian deserved to walk for his moment of madness, which came just weeks after Declan Rice saw red for committing the same misdemeanour against Brighton.

Keane tore into Trossard, saying: "That could be a yellow [itself], the barge into him! We'll probably have to hear people all week saying, 'Let me see it again', but what do you need to see again?

"I'm just saying if you're on a yellow card, I've said it before - and unfortunately I've had a few reds - you try not to give the referee a chance to give you another yellow! He's given [Michael Oliver] the perfect opportunity. He's barged into somebody and then he has kicked the ball away - it's not even a debate. You don't need to watch it 30 times. He's wrong: it's a second yellow and it's the height of stupidity."

Merson also questioned Trossard's decision-making, adding: "Trossard's a good footballer with a good brain. If that as real time, he sidefoots that ball out to Martinelli, he doesn't boot it out with his laces.

"He's heard the whistle and he's kicked it. He knows what he's doing."

When Walcott was asked if Arteta now needed to speak to his players about the delaying of restarts, he said: "It reminds me of the incident with [Robin] Van Persie at the Nou Camp when he kicked. Van Persie's quality; he knows he shouldn't have done that.

"I've got to agree, Trossard knows what he's doing. You need to learn your lesson. Hopefully now they're going to learn, but [Arsenal] are frustrated about the Doku one as well."
