Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has admitted to being "swept away" by emotion when filming for her role in new ITV drama Joan, based on the life of Joan Hannington, during her divorce from Joe Jonas.

The 28-year-old actress, who shares two children with Jonas Brothers star and father of her two children Joe, has revealed how she identified with the teen mum, who became a notorious gangster in the 1980s. Their divorce took a turn when the pair were embroiled in a bitter dispute over their two girls Willa, four, and Delphine, two.

Although their divorce is now finally completed, when filming Joan, Sophie recalls being "swept away" by emotion, finding it easy to cry for the cameras as she felt so emotional. She said: "I’m a Pisces. I’m very emotional. And I’m a mother, so anything to do with children and it just flows out. I think sometimes when you are doing a show like this and there’s diamonds and glamour, you get swept away by it all."

Sophie, known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, said the "remarkable" true story shows the different facets of jewel-thief Joan, who earned herself the moniker The Godmother. The show follows Joan as she escapes her violent husband, forced to put her daughter into care while she gets herself sorted. She's left homeless, with no money, before getting a job in a jewellers, where she steals her first diamonds. She meets antiques dealer Boisie, played by Frank Dillane, and the pair become partners in crime.

Sophie explained: "There really is so much to her – mother, lover, liar, thief," adding: "You have to remember that this is to provide a solid and stable life for her daughter so she can get her back. And it’s really a heartbreaking story." The story will have been especially poignant for Sophie, who was filming amid her own custody battle with her ex.

Sophie and her on-screen lover Frank built up a strong bond, with Frank supporting her emotionally. The actress added: "We became really close actually during this. It was imperative that we had a good relationship and I think I kind of artistically fell in love with Frank a little bit, because the way he works is so fascinating. I really found myself kind of relying on him for a lot of it, the kind of emotional stuff." Frank, who also starred as Nick Clarke in Walking Dead, agreed, admitting: "Sophie is so easy to love. I found it just such a pleasure."

The real life Joan, who is now 68 and living a normal life, attended the premiere and commended ITV for their casting, joking she is "jealous" of the younger, "slimmer" Sophie. She added: "They couldn’t have got anyone better – so kudos to them. I hope they get the recognition they deserve."
