A pub which gave the Lancashire town Nelson its name is closing after 219 years.

Last orders will be called for the final time at the Lord Nelson on October 2.

The pub, which dates back to 1805, is shutting because owner Admiral Taverns is selling it.

Nelson was once known as Great Marsden but in the mid 1800s, when the railway arrived, it changed its name to differentiate it from Marsden in Yorkshire.

The pub was named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who died in 1805.

Historian Roger Frost said: “It is the only town in England, as far as I know, named after a pub.”

Landlady Samantha Barrett said: “It’s always been my local so I am kind of glad that it is me that will be seeing it out.”
