Vera is set to return for two more episodes - as fans eagerly speculate about the show's conclusion.

Brenda Blethyn has confirmed that she will be retiring DCI Vera Stanhope's iconic hat at the end of the upcoming series, marking the end of the drama. A special documentary will also be aired to commemorate the final series.

David Leon as DI Joe Ashworth, Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones as DC Mark Edwards, Sarah Kameela Impey as pathologist Dr Paula Bennett, and Rhiannon Clements as DC Steph Duncan are all set to reprise their roles in the new series.

The first episode will see DCI Stanhope summoned to the Tyne river, where a young man's body has been discovered by anglers. The deceased is soon identified as a former inmate, but who is responsible for his death?

The team must unravel a complex web of broken relationships, resentment, regret, clandestine love and fraud to uncover the truth behind the young man's demise, reports .

The second and final episode will see Vera revisit a cherished location from her childhood, the legendary local stones known as The Dark Wives. A body is discovered at the base of the stones - but why was the promising young student assaulted and left so far from home?

While details about the two concluding episodes remain scant, it has been hinted that they will chart Vera's personal journey, with producers promising a "compelling and emotional farewell" - leaving fans wondering how it will all conclude for Vera.

Speculation has been rife that Vera, the beloved character, could meet her end in the final episodes. Brenda, speaking on the series wrapping up, lavished praise on everyone involved, including die-hard admirers.

"Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I'm sad to be saying Cheerio," she declared.

"But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I'll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role. The Producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I'm going to miss them, but I won't forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the north east and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
