and new sporting director are keen to strengthen a number of areas in the squad in the summer, football.london understands. Berta, alongside managing director Richard Garlick, executive vice chairman Tim Lewis and co-chairman Josh Kroenke, faces the challenge of improving the Arsenal starting XI as well as adding some much needed depth.
Speaking to following his appointment, Berta said: “I am thrilled to be joining Arsenal in what is a hugely exciting period for the club. I have watched with great interest the way Arsenal has evolved in recent years and I have admired the hard work that has gone in to re-establishing the club as a major force in European football with a passionate following around the world.
“The club has great values and a rich history, and I am looking forward to playing my part in shaping a successful future with a great team. I cannot wait to get started in my new role and I am really looking forward to experiencing my first game at Emirates Stadium together with our supporters.”
Before Berta's arrival, when Edu Gaspar was in the job, Arsenal completed the groundwork for two deals which could potentially be announced as early as June 1. The first is Benjamin Sesko, who is highly admired by the Gunners, football.london understands, and was tracked extensively in the build up to Euro 2024.
football.london understands that the interest in Sesko has not evaporated and Arsenal have watched the forward closely. The 21-year-old has scored 20 goals and contributed six assists in 42 appearances for RB Leipzig this season.
It has previously been reported that Sesko could leave Leipzig in the summer despite signing a new deal with the German side in June last year, with it being described as a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ without a specific written clause. With Arsenal's interest still genuine, it's possible the club may have already struck a deal.
Another player who Arsenal have already made progress with is Martin Zubimendi. football.london .
There is a €60million (£51million) release clause in the Spain international’s contract that has existed for some time but even then, the likes of Liverpool have failed to entice the player away from the club he has developed and grown at in San Sebastian. While a deal has yet to be officially announced, it may well be that an agreement is already in place between both clubs and the player, which would be a huge boost given Zubimendi's quality.
The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona have shown an interest in Zubimendi, however, so Arsenal really do need to move quickly if they want to secure the Spaniard's signature.
Of course, if Arsenal do not sign any new players between June 1 and June 10, then the summer transfer window will officially open on June 16. This is when the majority of clubs will do their business.
