Why it all started?
All this began with the brutal Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, where militants targeted and killed 26 civilians — mostly Hindu tourists — in a chilling act of religiously-motivated violence. The assault, carried out with militaru-grade weapons, sparked nationwide outrage and drew sharp focus on cross-border terrorism. The Resistance Front, initially claiming responsibility before retracting it, was believed to be linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, further escalating suspicions of external involvement.
India suspended the key water treatyIn swift retaliation, India suspended its treaty with Pakistan on April 23, citing national security concerns and a breakdown of trust. This diplomatic move marked a significant departure from past protocol, signalling the gravity of the situation. On April 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded with a green light to the armed forces, granting them full operational freedom to act at their discretion — a rare but resolute shift in policy.
Operation Sindoor on May 7This series of developments culminated in ‘Operation Sindoor’, launched on May 7, as a calibrated military strike on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation, which continues to define the current phase of India-Pakistan tensions, underscores India’s hardened stance against terrorisn and reaffirms its resolve to protect civilian lives and national sovereignty at all costs.
