After spending more than two weeks in Pakistan’s custody, BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw was repatriated to India on Wednesday morning through the Attari-Wagah border. Shaw, who had inadvertently crossed the border while on duty on April 23, was handed over to Indian authorities following persistent diplomatic and military efforts.

Accidental Crossing Near the Zero Line

Shaw, a native of Hooghly in West Bengal, had been recently posted at the Indo-Pakistan border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district. On April 23, while assisting local farmers working near the zero line, he accidentally entered Pakistani territory. Shaw, dressed in uniform and on official duty, was apprehended by Pakistan Rangers soon after crossing the line. The incident occurred just days after he had joined his ad-hoc team on April 10.

Initial attempts to engage in flag meetings between the BSF and Pakistan Rangers yielded limited progress, especially as tensions along the border escalated and communication channels between the forces broke down. Despite this, the BSF continued to press for Shaw’s release through regular flag meetings and established communication lines, which eventually facilitated his return.

Family Relieved, Official Confirmation Awaited

Shaw’s family in West Bengal was informed of the expected release late Tuesday night. His father, Bhola Nath Shaw, a retired bank employee, said that senior officers had reached out to notify them of the development, though they were still waiting for formal confirmation.

At around 10:30 am on Wednesday, Shaw was officially handed over to Indian authorities at the Joint Check Post (JCP) at Attari, Amritsar. A BSF spokesperson confirmed the repatriation, acknowledging the consistent efforts that led to his return.

This development marks a significant moment of relief for both the BSF and Shaw’s family, especially as cross-border tensions and miscommunication had initially stalled the process. His safe return was made possible through a blend of operational persistence and diplomatic coordination.
