The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Friday approved four railway multitracking projects, with a total estimated investment of Rs 18,658 crore.
These initiatives, covering Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh, aim to enhance the existing railway network by approximately 1,247 kilometers.
Among the projects, the Cabinet has approved an investment of Rs 8,741 crore for the construction of a new 615 km railway line in Chhattisgarh, expected to save Rs 2,520 crore in logistical costs compared to road transport on this route. The Kharsia – Naya Raipur – Parmalkasa line will provide direct access to areas such as Baloda Bazar, paving the way for the establishment of new industrial units, including cement plants, in the region.
Additionally, an allocation of Rs 4,819 crore has been approved for the line doubling project on the Gondia-Balharshah route in Maharashtra. In Odisha, a 277 km project worth Rs. 3,917 crore will add third and fourth lines between Sambalpur and Jarapada.
The fourth project that has been approved is Jharsuguda – Sason 3rd and 4th line in Odisha.
Furthermore, the projects will generate approximately 379 lakh human-days of direct employment during construction. With these infrastructure advancements, 19 new stations will be constructed, improving connectivity to around 3,350 villages and benefiting a population of approximately 47.25 lakh.
The capacity augmentation will facilitate an additional freight traffic of 88.77 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA), contributing to lower logistics costs, reduced oil imports (by 95 crore litres), and decreased CO2 emissions (by 477 crore Kg), equivalent to planting 19 crore trees.
