Rajat Garg, a 2019 NIT Delhi graduate, began his career as a software developer at Microsoft. A serial entrepreneur, Rajat has previously co-founded three startups -Jini, KiddoConnect, and MindWhisper - before co-founding another called Bosscoder Academy, an upskilling platform for tech engineers.
In his recent LinkedIn post, Rajat Garg reflected on his Microsoft experience, emphasizing two major insights that shaped his approach to both tech and career growth. First, he realized that regardless of educational background, two things consistently stand out: proficiency in data structures and algorithms (DSA) and a passion for hard work. Rajat observed that these skills were far more important than the name of the college someone attended. Dedication to improving technical abilities and a strong work ethic were what made individuals excel in the tech world.
"No matter where you come from, these two things will take you far. It’s not about the name of your college, but the skills you bring and your dedication to improving them," he said.
Second, Rajat stresses the vastness of the tech industry. He witnessed engineers at Microsoft working on a wide array of fields, from AI and blockchain to hardware and data analytics. The key, he notes, is finding your niche—the area of tech that excites you the most—and fully committing to mastering it. "What’s your niche in tech? Have you found it yet?" he said.
Rajat Garg in an earlier post had shared what helped him get into Microsoft. First, holistic preparation is crucial, so don't just focus on Data Structures and Algorithms - work on system design, development projects, and CS fundamentals, he said. He said that in his Microsoft interview, he faced both DSA and system design questions, while Amazon focused on my projects. Second, consistency is everything. For two years, he said, he solved problems daily, and though it wasn't easy, those steady efforts paid off.
