The State Government came under attack from citizens including Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and venture capitalist Mohandas Pai after Monday morning downpour left Bengaluru, including tech parks and software suburbs in knee-deep water. The rains left one dead and many houses damaged.
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw expressed her outrage on social media, sharing some clips of inundated roads near tech parks. “Overnight rains and the condition of Bengaluru roads when monsoon is yet to arrive. Fixing the city's infra is a sore point and our city and its people don’t deserve this,” she wrote on X.
Pai, who is also the chairman of Aarin Capital, urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and deputy CM DK Shivakumar to take responsibility and find a permanent solution. “BBMP has failed miserably again and again.” Pai added “No hope with them. Why should citizens continue to suffer for a failed BBMP? Why is our government protecting failed engineers of BBMP?”
As several areas were waterlogged, leading to slow-moving traffic at major junctions, citizens poked fun at the administrators and the government. One of them said it was not Greater Bengaluru, but Water Bengaluru.
Stung by the sarcasm, Shivakumar airdashed back to Bengaluru from Hosapete to undertake a quick inspection of rain-affected areas. The Dy CM acknowledged the problems with the city's infrastructure, and said,”Let us be clear: the issues we face today are not new. They have been ignored for years, across governments and administrations.” He justified saying that the government is going to solve them, not with temporary fixes, but with long-term, sustainable solutions.
As per Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) the city recorded 105.5 mm of rainfall as of 8:30 am on Monday. Areas such as Outer Ring Road, Silk Board junction, HSR Layout , Sony World Signal in Koramangala,Indiranagar and others reported heavy water logging. Many employees working in tech parks decided to work from home anticipating heavy traffic on route.
“About 75% of the workforce reported to the office despite ongoing traffic congestion and water logging issues, while 25% opted to work from home to avoid the commute,” said Krishna Kumar Gowda, a representative from IT companies Association.
One of the largest IT and business hubs in north Bengaluru, Manyata Tech Park which is home to numerous multinational corporations and IT giants, resembled somewhat like a lake, with citizens reporting over two feet of water logged at entry points.
BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao who inspected a posh residential area behind the park, said he has asked officials to deploy pumps and ensure quick drainage of water wherever waterlogging persists. “Assured that permanent measures will be initiated to resolve the recurring water logging issue in Sai Layout, which falls under BBMP jurisdiction,” he wrote on X.
