The ICC T20 World Cup winning Indian team on Thursday were greeted in Mumbai by scores of fans at the Marine Drive. The team had an open bus victory parade from Nariman Point to the Wankhede Stadium.
Upon reaching the stadium, a presentation ceremony was organised where the team was presented with Rs 125 crore from the BCCI, after which the team took a victory lap.
Team India coach Rahul Dravid, who will walk away from coaching duties, thanked the fans. “I am going to miss this love. What I saw on the streets tonight, I won't forget.: This is phenomenal. I think it's the fans who make cricket the game it is. We are truly indebted to you guys,” said Dravid.
Captain Rohit Sharma too talked about fans saying, “The huge turnout of fans to welcome us shows they were as desperate for this T20 World Cup title as we were.”
Player of the final Virat Kohli talked about how this win was special as a senior player and how he had not understood the emotions of the seniors back in 2011, when he was the youngest player of the team. “I couldn't connect with the emotions of seniors who cried that night (after 2011 World Cup triumph) but now I do,” said the former captain.
Kohli added that he had never seen Sharma emotional on the field. “We both cried and hugged while going on the steps to the dressing room,” he said.
Host Gaurav Kapur called Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah as a "national treasure" and the "eighth wonder of the world" to which Virat Kohli agreed.
Bumrah said that he had never seen anything like what he had seen this evening. “What I saw today, I have never seen anything like this.” Bumrah added that it was a special feeling for his son to be present at the ground when he lifted the World Cup. He also assured that he had just started and his retirement was hopefully still far away.
Sharma and Kohli retired from T20 internationals after winning the coveted trophy.
Team India won a World Cup after 13 years and an ICC trophy after 11 years. They had previously come close but had faltered in the semi final or the final multiple times.
