Karan Johar to host Indian version 'The Traitors' for Prime Video

Karan Johar is set to host the Indian adaptation of the globally popular reality show, ' The Traitors', which will stream on Prime Video. The platform made the announcement on Tuesday, revealing its collaboration with independent distributor All3Media International for this project. The game show, which has already been popular in more than 20 countries, is produced by BBC Studios India Productions. The Indian version will be available in Hindi, with English subtitles.

The game show, known for its thrilling combination of trust and deception, features 20 participants who will compete for a large cash prize in a royal palace setting. The twist, however, is that some contestants will secretly be assigned the role of ‘traitors,’ handpicked by the host at the start of the game. The players must complete various missions to win the prize money, all while navigating the challenge of identifying the traitors among them.

Producer-director Karan Johar expressed his excitement about hosting the show, calling it a high-stakes game full of drama and suspense. He shared his admiration for the original versions of 'The Traitors' hosted by Claudia Winkleman in the UK and Alan Cumming in the US. Their captivating hosting styles have left audiences on the edge of their seats, and Johar is eager to bring his own flair to the Indian version. He hinted that the 20 contestants will be in for a rollercoaster experience, with him orchestrating surprises from behind the scenes.

Nikhil Madhok, Head of Originals at Prime Video India, emphasized that unscripted content is becoming increasingly important for the platform. Shows like 'Angry Young Men' and 'Follow Kar Lo Yaar' have seen significant growth in viewership, leading to more investment in reality-based programming. Madhok highlighted 'The Traitors' as a unique format that has captured global audiences, and he expressed confidence that Johar’s charisma will elevate the show’s entertainment value.

Sabrina Duguet, Executive Vice President APAC at All3Media International, noted that 'The Traitors' will introduce a new genre of reality television fandom to Indian viewers. With Prime Video’s reach in India, the show is expected to gain significant traction, adding to the over 30 versions already commissioned worldwide.

Sameer Gogate, General Manager at BBC Studios India Productions, added that the Indian adaptation would remain faithful to the original format while resonating with a broad audience. He expressed excitement about offering a thrilling experience that will appeal to viewers of all ages and preferences.
