Ontario: A landlord in Ontario, Canada, has alleged that a group of tenants, whom he claims are Khalistani supporters, have not paid rent or utility bills since January 2025, forcing him into financial and emotional distress.
The issue came to wider attention after independent journalist Nitin Chopra shared a video of the property and interviews with the landlord on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The property, located in a quiet neighbourhood, now displays a Khalistan flag tied to a post outside, something the landlord, Raman Kumar, said was done without his knowledge or consent. “I am very scared by these kinds of activities, and the neighbourhood is also unhappy,” Kumar told Chopra in the now-viral video. “Authorities need to intervene. We’ve always lived peacefully as a community, and this is creating unnecessary tensions," he added.

Kumar also said that he rented the house to five students in October 2024, who paid rent only until December. Since then, he claimed, they have neither paid the C$3,300 monthly rent nor contributed to utilities. “I’m paying the mortgage, property tax, and insurance out of my own pocket. These tenants are making my life miserable," he said.
Concerns Over Safety and Overcrowding
The situation reportedly went beyond just unpaid bills. Kumar alleged that more people are living in the house than originally agreed upon. “I can’t give the exact number, but there are a lot of people coming and going,” he said, raising concerns about overcrowding and unauthorised subletting.
Neighbours have also begun to voice complaints over alleged disturbances during the night, with Kumar saying the local community feels increasingly uneasy. Legal proceedings have been initiated, but Kumar notes that the process is dragging. “I’ve started legal proceedings, but it will take time,” he told Chopra.
As the flag continues to wave outside his property, Kumar says he feels frustrated. “This is putting me under extreme mental stress. I myself live in a rented house and have my own expenses," he said.
