Mumbai: Mumbai faced heavy rains since early Monday morning, causing severe disruptions to air travel. Following intense rain from early hours of the day, domestic and international flights to and from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were affected, leaving many passengers stranded at the airport.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has been lashed with rains and thunderstorms since Sunday night. The heavy downpour continued on Monday morning, with the heaviest downpour in Nariman Point, with 104mm rainfall recorded in just one hour between 9 am to 10 am. Other areas like Colaba recorded 83 mm, CSMT recorded 80 mm, and Malabar Hill recorded 63 mm of rainfall in an hour.

The intense rains caused massive disruptions to air travel. Multiple airlines announced disruptions and asked the passengers to check their flight’s status before leaving for the airport. While most of the international airlines also suffered the hit due to weather conditions, domestic airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet suffered a major hit due to multiple flights scheduled in the morning.

IndiGo, which operates the most numbers of domestic flights from CSMIA, announced that several flights have been impacted due to heavy rains in Mumbai and the airline is trying to manage the situation and minimise the delays. “We're all hands on deck to ensure that you reach your destination safely and as quickly as possible. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. If you have any immediate concerns or need assistance, our airport team is present at all touchpoints to help you,” said the airline in its travel advisory.

Air India asked its passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport for a smooth travel experience. Similarly, SpiceJet announced that the bad weather will also affect the departures and arrivals as well as the consequential flights.

While the airlines tried their best to minimise the issues of passengers, many passengers were left stranded at Mumbai Airport due to delayed flights. Travellers took to social media to share their concerns. Raj Goradia, a traveller, wrote, “Our flight from Mumbai to Chandigarh got delayed and we have a connecting flight from Chandigarh to Kangra airport. Our expected arrival time at Chandigarh is 1.20 pm, so we need your help for the internal transfer, to whom we should request.

Notably, the monsoon officially arrived in Maharashtra on May 25, nearly ten days earlier than its usual date. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, continued rainfall is predicted for the next few days. Intense rainfall is expected to also disrupt flight operations in a similar manner. The city's suburban train services were also affected across all three major lines.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd. also released a passenger advisory post noon asking travellers to check on their status of flight before leaving for the airport. "In light of the inclement weather and forecast of heavy to very heavy rains, we request all our passengers to connect with their respective airlines. Passengers are also advised to leave for the airport earlier than usual, in order to evade traffic congestions," said a spokesperson of CSMIA.
