Stop Telling Women to 'Power Through' Period Pain; It's Not Always Normal

Send Push

For generations, women have been told that menstrual pain is just “part of being a woman.” Society has normalised period cramps to the extent that women are expected to carry on with daily routines-work, school, caregiving- despite debilitating pain. But the truth is, not all period pain is normal, and it’s high time we stop brushing it off.

Mild discomfort during menstruation is common due to the uterus contracting to shed its lining. This mild discomfort too, should not be considered normal. Women should rest or choose to work remotely if need be. Intense, chronic, or worsening pain during periods can be a sign of underlying health conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids-serious medical issues that often go undiagnosed for years. Many women suffer in silence, believing their pain is normal because that’s what they've always been told.

This widespread minimisation of menstrual pain has real consequences. Women are often dismissed by healthcare providers, resulting in delayed diagnoses and prolonged suffering. According to research, it takes an average of 7–10 years for endometriosis to be properly diagnosed. This delay not only affects physical health but also impacts mental wellbeing, career progression, and overall quality of life.

The idea that women should 'power through' their periods perpetuates harmful gender norms. No one should have to prove their strength by ignoring pain. Menstrual health is just as important as any other aspect of wellbeing, and we must challenge the expectation that women remain productive no matter how severe their symptoms are.

What we need is more empathy, awareness, and education. Normalising conversations around menstrual health can help break the stigma and encourage women to seek help without shame. Workplaces and schools should also adopt more supportive policies, such as menstrual leave or flexible arrangements, so that those suffering can prioritise their health without guilt.

It’s time to listen to women’s pain, believe their experiences, and demand better healthcare responses. Because while periods are natural, suffering through them shouldn’t be. Let’s redefine what’s 'normal' and ensure every woman receives the care and compassion she deserves.
