Send Push

Some of the biggest stars from the Harry Potter franchise had a lot less screen time than you might think.

The eight Harry Potter films have an entire running time of 19 hours and 39 minutes. You would assume then most major characters might have at least one hour of screen time.

However, many of the iconic characters from the series - even including the famous trio - have a lot less screen time than fans might think. We've pulled together a list of some of the most iconic characters from the series and how much screen time they had in total.

Here's the full list of Harry Potter stars and their screen time, according to IMDB:

Daniel Radcliffe - Harry Potter image

Unsurprisingly, Daniel has the most screen time throughout the eight films. In total, Harry appears for 539 minutes and 15 seconds.

That's an hourly total of over eight hours. But even being the main character, that is still only half of the total film time.

Rupert Grint - Ron Weasley image

Second to Harry is his best friend Ron Weasley, played by Rupert Grint. We're introduced to Ron pretty quickly and so it's no surprise that he has the second highest screen time.

He appears for a total of 211 minutes and 45 seconds, that's just under four hours.

Emma Watson - Hermione Granger image

Hermione - played by Emma Watson - appears for 205 minutes throughout the eight movies. That's three hours and 41 minutes.

That's not even a third of the entire film length across all of the films.

Richard Harris and Michael Gambon - Albus Dumbledore image

Player by two actors, Albus Dumbledore was the head of Hogwarts.

He played a Grandfatherly role and was also pivotal in Harry's survival.

However, his total screen time was 77 minutes and 15 seconds - that's just over 1 hour and a quarter.

Robbie Coltrane - Rubeus Hagrid image

Another character that plays a crucial role in Harry's development is Rubeus Hagrid. Groundskeeper for Hogwarts, Hagrid is introduced to us from the very start, helping baby Harry get safely to the Dursley's.

However, in total he's only in the films for 45 minutes and 45 seconds - not even the full running time of one movie.

Alan Rickman - Severus Snape image

Severus Snape is a character who contributes to the attempted demise of Harry Potter. Played by Alan Rickman, Snape is a character whom many fans feel conflicted towards.

That's because he's a follower of Lord Voldemort, but was in love with Lily Potter and does show elements of empathy towards Harry.

But in total, Snape only appears for 43 minutes and 15 seconds.

Ralph Fiennes - Lord Voldemort image

Ralph Fiennes - AKA Lord Voldemort - doesn't physically appear until the fourth film, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

He then appears in the rest of the films, taking his total screen time to 37 minutes and 15 seconds.

Tom Felton - Draco Malfoy image

Many Harry Potter fans were shocked at the very little amount of screen time Draco Malfoy has in the movies. For many, he seems to appear rather a lot.

Whether that's in the Great Hall, in Diagon Alley or at the Battle of Hogwarts, he's often around. But in total, Tom Felton who plays Malfoy only has 31 minutes and 45 seconds of screen time.

Bonnie Wright - Ginny Weasley image

The youngest of the Weasley siblings, Ginny appears for just 15 seconds in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

Though her screen time increases throughout, as she plays a pivotal role in the Chamber of Secrets and then of course, we see a blossoming romance between her and Harry. She gets 30 minutes and 15 seconds in total, throughout the eight films.

Dame Maggie Smith - Professor McGonagall image

Dame Maggie Smith - who played Professor McGonagall - died last week (Friday September 27). She was known for many other things within TV, film and theatre but many Harry Potter fans shared their sadness over the news of her death.

McGonagall was instrumental in keeping Hogwarts together, but she also saw a great deal of potential in Harry - not only as a wizard but also as a Quidditch player.

She is another character who we could presume appears a lot, but she only has a total screen time of 28 minutes and 45 seconds.

Evanna Lynch - Luna Lovegood image

A quirky character, Luna Lovegood was played by Evanna Lynch.

We first meet her in the fifth film - Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She's a lovely character and becomes a friend of Harry's.

She's only on screen for 17 minutes though.
