Gardening expert shares simple swap to keep your lawn green with 'right' fertiliser

As autumn draws near, many of us will be bidding farewell to our verdant, flourishing gardens and dreading the arrival of brown, patchy grass. However, this needn't be the case, according to a TikToker.

A straightforward switch can help your lawn appear lively, even during the colder months, and it concerns the type of fertiliser you employ. Gardening guru Follow my lawn shared a clip of his garden and explained: "This is how I'm going to keep my lawn green this winter. "As we approach winter, my lawn will become dormant, meaning granular fertiliser will no longer work efficiently. "To combat this, I'll be using Lawn Rules liquid fertiliser as a foliar application to provide my lawn and soil with all the nutrients it requires, plus give my lawn a great colour boost going through winter".

They continued: "Keeping our lawn healthy during winter will negate many of the common lawn issues found during winter such as colour loss, fungal disease and waterlogging."

Green Lawn Supplies supports the assertion that granular fertiliser becomes less efficient during the chillier months.

The moment at which the lawn enters dormancy varies depending on your location and the climate you experience.

The website explains: "There is a cross over point where your lawns ability to take in nutrients changes and that is due to little things called microorganisms.

"Studies have found that the temperature of the soil plays a major effect on microbial activity, what this means for your lawn is that there is less usable nutrients available in the soil for the roots to absorb."

While there's no specific moment when granular fertiliser becomes less effective, specialists recommend it begins losing strength once soil temperatures fall beneath 14C.

"This is because the microorganisms struggle to break down the granular fertiliser into usable nutrients before it is inevitably washed away with the rain that winter brings," Green Lawn Supplies adds.

They additionally advise opting for a liquid fertiliser, and endorse GLS Green Envy.

Liquid fertilisers prove more beneficial during winter months as they don't depend on microbial activity.

The specialists further recommend a "foliar application", which involves spraying the fertiliser directly onto the plant's leaves.
