Channel 4's documentary on Lancashire teen Jay Slater includes some harrowing details from medical professionals, who worked on the case of his death. The Disappearance of Jay Slater will be aired on Sunday night, and delves into the mysterious death of the 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer.
Jay, who had been in Tenerife for the NRG music festival in Playa de las Americas with his mates, was missing for a month before his body was tragically discovered in the island's remote mountains in July 2024. As well as exclusive interviews with Jay's friends and family, the documentary sees Dr James Adeley, the coroner who looked into Jay's death, discuss how he was found.
Speaking on the documentary at the Royal Blackburn Hospital on August 1st last year, Dr Adeley says: "A previous post-mortem had been performed in Spain. It would be nice to get the results of that Post-mortem examination but they are notoriously slow at producing reports."

He went on to explain the horrific lengths taken to identify Jay's body, which had been in the sun for a month before he was found. The medic said that Jay was still identifiable by his finger prints, despite the high level of decomposition, adding that Jay "was positively identified by two separate methods."

Elsewhere in the documentary, Jay's friends reveal the last time they spoke to the teen, who had left the music festival with two men he had met there, Ayub Qassim and Steven Roccas. He went to their Airbnb in the Masca area of the Canaries island.
One of the last photos he took was in the doorway of the Airbnb at 7.30am, tagged as the Rural de Teno park. He left there at around 8am, before attempting to walk the 50km journey back to his accommodation.
He spoke to his friend Lucy Law on the phone, before his battery died. Jay was eventually found on 15 July by a mountain rescue team in the Juan Lopez ravine. An autopsy found that he died as a result of injuries from an accidental fall and that there was no third party involvement.
On a call to Spanish police, Lucy said: "My friend, he's met some people, and they've drove him up into the mountains. I don't know why and he's left the house.
"And I don't know if something happened, and I was telling him, you need to go back to your friends and tell them to drive you back down. And he said, 'No, I can't. I can't'. But I don't know why that was." The police asked Lucy for her her friend's name, with her confirming it was Jay Slater, who had asked to be rescued.
"Yes, he said feels like he's going to die up there, and then the phone cut off," she said. The audio from the call to the police, which had never been heard before, provides fresh insight into the events of June 17.
The Channel 4 film also reveals previously unheard audio, as well as unsent messages, as well as access to the Slater family as they continue to search for answers about what had happened to him.
Executive Producer Anna Hall said of the documentary: “We have been working with Debbie and Warren [Jay's mum and dad] and Jay’s wider family since last June. What we have witnessed has been utterly horrific – not only the pain of a family in deep grief, but the full onslaught of the online world, the world of TikTokers and YouTubers who feel they can say whatever they like, widely speculating about one family’s tragedy.
“It is appalling what has happened to Jay’s family – and we hope this film will help to bring awareness of the real life consequences of online speculation. It is an unmonitored world where fake news runs rife – and this film shows the devastating impact this has had on one grieving family.”
