Netflix just added 'must watch' crime series fans say is 'better than Sherlock'

Netflix has just dropped episodes of a criminally overlooked crime thriller series that's sure to delight fans of the genre with some claiming it is 'better than Sherlock'.

The streaming platform has added the acclaimed drama Ripper Street as of today (April 4). Initially a joint British-American production by the , it first graced our screens from 2012 until 2016, with five gripping series in total.

At one point, the show's future hung in the balance after its second series, but Amazon swooped in with additional funding to keep the cameras rolling. Now, it's poised to enjoy a resurgence on the rival streaming platform.

Overall, the show boasts an impressive 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with its final season clinching a flawless 100% score. Now, subscribers can reacquaint themselves with the show that's set to become a firm favourite for those seeking their next binge-watch.

The narrative kicks off six months after Jack the Ripper's last murder, when Detective Edmund Reid and his team are confronted with a fresh spate of gruesome murders. This sparks fears that the notorious killer has returned to prowl the streets of East London, reports .

Subsequent series see the main characters tackling other crimes, with the show often drawing inspiration from actual historical events. The cast features Matthew Macfadyen as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid. Macfadyen would later star in Succession as well as Deadpool and Wolverine.

Joining the cast was Jerome Flynn, known for his role in Game of Thrones, playing Detective Sergeant Bennet Drake, who is the trusty sidekick to Reid.

When the show first hit the screens, it received glowing reviews, including a critic from The Guardian who hailed the series with the words: "A ridiculously underrated Victorian crime thriller with writing so deft and nimble it takes your breath away."
