Tesco app down: Supermarket suffers huge outage as customers left unable to log in

Tesco customers have been unable to access the retailer's app and website with a huge number of people reporting an outage after a "software problem". Many shoppers have taken to social media to complain about problems checking-out online shopping and with accessing their Clubcards through.

Tesco's account on X replied to one user saying it is having "intermittent system issues at the moment which the IT team are currently working hard to resolve." More than 1,500 people have reported problems on DownDetector with the problems beginning for most around mid afternoon. There was a spike in reports of an outage at midday.

DownDetector said that 57% of reports were about the app, 25% login and 18% were regarding the internet. Many people have commented about the problem online. One person wrote: “Anyone else unable to log in to Tesco?” and another said: “Tesco online groceries and the app both not working.”

Customers on social media have listed multiple problems. One reported issues with Apple Pay in a store as well as difficulties with gift cards. A heat map showing the outages indicates that most problems have been in London and as well as Norwich.

DownDetector showed increasing levels of reported problems but they started to subside after 4pm. And Tesco now has confirmed it was a "software issue".

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have fixed a software issue that temporarily impacted customers using our website and app this afternoon. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.”

There was another Tesco outage two months ago, shown on DownDetector, when a shopper said they had received a message from Tesco saying that the problem was at their end. She wrote: "Anyone else having problems with either slow or zero loading pages to update orders for tomorrow, or any time? Frustrating even when logging in to the site, receive the message "It's not you, it's us" - Not helpful, Tesco!"

Meanwhile earlier today Halifax was hit by an outage that took down mobile banking and online banking, leaving people unable to access money. According to DownDetector, the bank's problems started at around 11am and have affected more than 1,000 users.

In an official statement, a Halifax spokesperson said: "Our app and online banking are up and running. We know it took customers a bit longer than usual to get logged on for a short time this morning, with customers able to do so after waiting a few extra moments, or giving it another try." The has contacted Tesco for comment.
