It should be good to be Bad in the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate. The demands of this prestigious Newcastle handicap should suit ZANNDABAD (3.15).
Irish trainer Tony Martin’s stayer didn’t get much luck in hot marathon races last season. He finished third in the Chester Cup after meeting traffic and he was short of room when attempting to mount his challenge in the Irish Cesarewitch. This will be his first run on the all-weather but he is bred to be at least as good on it. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. A few bookies are paying out on seven places.

HUMBLE SPARK (2.40) has only had a couple of tries over the 2m distance of the JenningsBet Northumberland Vase.
He was wiped out on the stands’ rail when looking a big threat over this course and distance in April and he put in a hugely-promising effort when chasing home prolific Caballo De Mar in a rare turf run at Haydock last month.
The likely strong pace in this consolation race for the Plate will be ideal for Jim Goldie’s hope. One of his stablemates, Midnight Lion, is among several potential frontrunners. Have 2pts each-way at 12-1. Sky Bet is going six places.
SERGEANT WILKO (1.40) developed into a smart sprinter last season. He won four times – including over today’s course and distance – and looks to be coming to the boil for Newcastle’s opening contest.
After a solid effort over this track and trip last month, he showed his usual early dash at Haydock three weeks later.
Wearing cheekpieces for the first time, he was much the best of those who raced more towards the far side and he has the best of the draw on the stands’ rail this time. Have 1pt each-way at 12-1. Sky Bet is offering five places.
There’s a decent card at York where STANAGE (1.55) is my best bet. He put in a sound performance over today’s course and distance when sixth at the Dante Meeting in May. The form of that race is particularly solid.
The combination of the tricky track and softer ground was to blame for a below-par run at Epsom on Oaks day.
He’s unexposed over a mile and this well-bred four-year-old has plenty of potential. Have 1pt each-way at 16-1. Several firms are paying four places.
