Hundreds of street parties, parades and events are being held across the UK this week as the nation marks the- put your postcode into our interactive guide to see if there is an event near you.

Local councils around the country will be closing roads for to celebrate the anniversary. There are also events planned in town halls, community centres, churches and schools in every area. Other events planned for this 80th milestone, include local beacon lighting events across the four countries of the , picnics in the parks, musical events, and parades.

A survey of councils found that Portsmouth was among the areas most likely to hold a street party this week with thirty-two residential streets closed off. In Wales, it's Merthyr Tydfil with nine. In the London borough of Redbridge there are 20 street closures for neighbourhood parties.

When it comes to organised events, Stoke-on-Trent will be doing their veterans proud this week, with more than 130 events arranged within a 50 mile radius of the town, more than any other part of the country outside London.

Thousands of people are expected to line the streets of central London on Bank Holiday Monday to take in a military procession and a flypast.

The events will start the build-up to Thursday May 8, which marks exactly 80 years since VE Day was declared. Prime Minister described the 80th anniversary as “a moment of national unity”.

Writing in the Daily , he said: “It will be a moment to remember. A chance to applaud the lion-hearted generation that defeated Nazi evil.

“But also an opportunity to honour those who follow in their footsteps and serve in our forces today. Because, just like the VE Day heroes, they sacrifice so much to keep our country safe.”

Our research found that there will not be as many street parties for the VE Day anniversary as in recent national events such as the Coronation or Royal Weddings.

A survey of councils around the country showed there have been just over 300 applications to local authorities for street closures for VE Day street parties. For the Coronation of it was reported that there were over 3,000 streets closed for neighbourhood parties.

Sixteen local authorities said they had not been asked to arrange for any street closures at all for the VE Day anniversary this time. However, there are organised events at town halls and civic centres in every part of the UK.

Pubs and bars have also been granted permission to stay open for longer to mark the anniversary. Venues in England and Wales which usually close at 11pm will be able to keep serving for an extra two hours to celebrate.

Churches and cathedrals across the country will ring their bells as a collective act of thanksgiving at 6.30pm, echoing the sounds that swept across the country in 1945, the Church of England said.
