In a major move against corruption and the drug nexus operating from behind bars, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has suspended 25 jail officials, including three deputy superintendents and two assistant superintendents. This action is part of a broader effort to clean up the prison system and tackle the state's deep-rooted drug crisis.
According to officials, intelligence inputs and internal complaints had indicated growing instances of corruption and collusion with drug networks inside jails. Acting on these reports, the government has taken decisive action to restore accountability and bring more transparency to the prison administration.
"A Step Towards Reforming Jail Management"A government spokesperson stated, “The suspensions aim to improve prison management and ensure stricter oversight. This action is not just disciplinary but part of a long-term plan to restructure the system.”
The move comes amid growing concerns over how organized crime and narcotics operations continue to function from within the jail walls, often with inside support.
Battle Against Drugs Gets a Tech BoostIn a parallel initiative, the Punjab government has signed an MoU with the Ananya Birla Foundation to set up a data intelligence and technical support unit to combat the drug menace more effectively.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, speaking at the signing ceremony, said, “This initiative will strengthen our efforts in drug prevention and rehabilitation. Data-driven strategies are essential to dismantle the supply chain and support recovery.”
A Multi-Pronged Strategy to Make Punjab Drug-FreeThe Punjab government has been actively pursuing a multi-layered strategy that includes:
-
Public awareness campaigns
-
Establishing rehabilitation centers
-
Cracking down on drug trafficking networks inside and outside jails
By targeting both the supply network and internal corruption, the state aims to create a more transparent and drug-free Punjab.
