ASSAM: The prime suspect in the gangrape case involving a minor in Dhing, Assam, died on August 24. The suspect, Tafazul Islam, was under police custody when he allegedly jumped into a pond while being taken to recreate the crime scene. His body was recovered by the police after an extensive search lasting nearly two hours.

According to police reports, Tafazul Islam managed to escape from his police escorts and leaped into a pond. An immediate search operation was launched, but despite their efforts, he was found dead.

The incident began on August 22 when a 14-year-old girl was reportedly attacked by three men on a motorcycle while she was returning home from tuition on her bicycle. She was left injured and unconscious near the pond. Local residents discovered her and promptly notified the police.

The victim was first taken to a local health center in Dhing but was later transferred to a hospital in Nagaon for further treatment and examination. Authorities have arrested one suspect, detained another, and are still searching for the third individual involved.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has promised stringent measures against those responsible. “The criminals who committed this brutal act against a minor will face severe consequences,” Sarma stated. He has instructed the Director General of Police and the Water Resources Minister to take immediate and tough action.

The Chief Minister also criticized certain community members, alleging that post-Lok Sabha elections, there has been an increase in criminal activities. He vowed to take strong action against anyone involved in such crimes.
