Delhi Suffers from Poor Air Quality as AQI Hits 293

Delhi woke up to a thick layer of smog on Friday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) plunging into the 'Poor' category at a reading of 293.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, an AQI in the 'Poor' range can lead to breathing discomfort for most people if exposed for an extended period. Prolonged exposure to an AQI classified as 'Very Poor' can result in respiratory illnesses.

In an effort to combat dust pollution, vehicles from the Public Welfare Department (PWD) sprayed water across various parts of the city as part of the Graded Response Action Plan-1 (GRAP-1).

Earlier this week, the Delhi Government confirmed the strict enforcement of GRAP-1 to enhance air quality in the national capital. This announcement followed a high-level meeting led by Chief Minister Atishi, attended by Environment Minister Gopal Rai and other senior officials.

The Chief Minister’s Office stated that 99 teams have been established to monitor construction sites for compliance with dust control measures. The PWD plans to deploy 200 anti-smog guns, while the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will provide 30, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) will offer 14, and the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will have 80 in place. Furthermore, Delhi Police will assign additional personnel to traffic-heavy areas, and Home Guards will remain on standby if necessary.

Chief Minister Atishi urged residents to consider carpooling, avoid burning crackers and waste, and report pollution incidents using the Green Delhi app.

Construction and demolition activities are significant contributors to rising levels of PM 2.5 and PM 10. Teams will ensure that dust control measures are enforced at both public and private construction sites, focusing on the proper disposal of waste.
