Mexico City: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi during her recent visit to Polanco, Bosque de Chapultepec in Mexico City. She laid floral offerings at Gandhi's statue, accompanied by a heartfelt performance of his favorite bhajan, "Vaishnav Jan To," by a local Mexican artist.

Sitharaman's visit, taking place from October 17 to October 20, aims to strengthen political and business relationships between India and Mexico. Throughout her stay, she plans to engage with leaders across various sectors in both Guadalajara and Mexico City.

At the India-Mexico Trade and Investment Summit, Sitharaman encouraged Mexican investors to explore opportunities in India's Global In-House Capability Centers (GICCs), along with sectors like aircraft and ship leasing, and the establishment of foreign universities at GIFT-IFSC, which is emerging as a global hub for reinsurance and sustainable finance.

The Finance Minister emphasized the significance of enhancing economic ties, particularly in pharmaceuticals, MedTech, and digital innovation. She called on private sector leaders from both countries to spearhead this partnership.

During her address at the summit, Sitharaman pointed out the potential for a multi-sectoral collaboration between India and Mexico, underlining India's strengths in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive industry. She reflected on the elevation of India-Mexico relations from a 'Privileged Partnership' to a 'Strategic Partnership' during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mexico in 2016.

Highlighting India’s political stability, skilled workforce, and advancing infrastructure, she noted that joint efforts should focus on enhancing resilience through diversification, especially in critical components like semiconductors and high-tech electronics.
