From India to Algeria: President Murmu Highlights Growing Friendship

President Droupadi Murmu embarked on a historic visit to Algeria, underscoring the long-standing political ties between India and Algeria since its independence. Her visit began with a warm ceremonial welcome, marking the first time an Indian President has visited Algeria.

Speaking at the Indian Community Reception in Algiers, President Murmu highlighted the close bond between the two nations despite their geographical distance. "When Algeria became independent in 1962, India was there to support Algeria, and we immediately established political relations. Since then, political relations have grown manifold. My visit has special significance in this context," she said. She emphasized that political leaders from both countries have maintained good relations over the years.

During her address, President Murmu praised the Indian community for their contributions to India's growth. "With the collective efforts of 1.4 billion Indians, we embark on a new journey of hope and aspirations. While India is moving ahead at a fast and rapid pace, the goodwill of the Indian community both in Algeria and abroad cannot be overemphasized," she stated.

The President also highlighted India’s growing role in global development, mentioning that India is one of the fastest-growing major economies, achieving a consistent annual growth rate of 8%. She expressed pride in India's status as the fifth-largest economy in the world and noted the significant reduction in poverty levels.

Indian Ambassador to Algeria, Swati Kulkarni, addressed the community, reiterating the historic bond between the two nations. "It is a very special day in India-Algeria relations. India supported the Algerian liberation movement against colonialism since its inception. Over the years, mutual trust and shared interests have strengthened this beautiful partnership," she said. Ambassador Kulkarni also emphasized the importance of President Murmu's visit, highlighting the contributions of the Indian community and Algerian counterparts.

The President's three-nation tour of Africa includes visits to Mauritania and Malawi, aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and signing multiple agreements. On October 14, President Murmu will pay her respects at the Maqam Echahid monument, dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Algerian War of Independence.
