India Achieves Paris Climate Goals Ahead of Schedule, PM Modi Highlights Progress at RE-INVEST 2024

Ahmadabad:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Monday that India has become the first G20 nation to meet its Paris Climate Agreement commitments, achieving this milestone nine years ahead of the deadline. Addressing the fourth Global Renewable Energy Investor's Meet (RE-INVEST) 2024 in Gandhinagar, PM Modi emphasized that this accomplishment was achieved by a developing country, surpassing what developed nations have managed.

"India is the first country in the G20 to achieve its Paris Climate commitments well before the deadline. We are the only G20 nation to reach this goal ahead of time. What developed nations could not achieve, a developing country has accomplished," Modi said. The Prime Minister highlighted India’s ongoing efforts to reach its target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. He praised the PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme designed to support households in setting up rooftop solar systems.

"Currently, we are working on multiple fronts to meet our 500 GW target by 2030. We are transforming the green transition into a people's movement. Our PM Surya Ghar-Muft Bijli Yojana is a unique rooftop solar initiative that funds the installation of solar systems for households," Modi explained. "Through this initiative, every household in India will become a power producer. So far, more than 13 million families have enrolled."

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the three-day Global Renewable Energy Investor's Meet (RE-INVEST) 2024, hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in Gandhinagar. He praised Mahatma Gandhi for his early advocacy of environmental consciousness, noting that Gandhi lived with a minimal carbon footprint long before climate change became a global concern. "Mahatma Gandhi’s life exemplified a minimal carbon footprint. He foresaw the environmental issues we face today and advocated for using resources wisely. For us, pursuing a green future and achieving net zero are not just goals but a commitment," Modi stated.

Highlighting India’s strategic focus on sustainable energy, Modi outlined the country’s dedication to solar, wind, nuclear, and hydropower to build a long-term energy foundation. He remarked that India is positioning itself for leadership in the next millennium. "Our goal is not just to reach the top but to stay there. Today, both Indians and the global community recognize India as a key player in the 21st century. Following the Global Fintech Fest and the Solar International Festival, and now the Global Semiconductor Summit, this conference continues our global engagement on green energy," Modi added.

RE-INVEST 2024, with the theme Mission 500 GW, focuses on India’s strategic objective to significantly expand its renewable energy capacity by 2030. As the world’s fourth-largest country in installed renewable energy capacity, India aims to strengthen its role in the global energy transition. The conference will include 44 sessions covering various aspects of renewable energy, such as a Chief Ministerial Plenary, a CEO Roundtable, discussions on innovations, and opportunities specific to different countries and states. It will also feature sessions on the role of women in energy transitions and provide a platform for start-ups, including pitches from the ten winners of the Solar X Challenge.
