Shillong: A devastating landslide in Koinadubi, Dalu village, claimed the life of 57-year-old Santa N Marak on Friday morning, while her daughter, 28-year-old Moralistic Marak, was injured and admitted to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Dalu. The landslide was triggered by incessant rainfall, part of a broader natural calamity impacting the Garo Hills region of Meghalaya.

The severe weather has led to multiple landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 lives and several injuries. In addition to human casualties, the heavy rains have caused widespread infrastructure damage, including the destruction of wooden bridges, damaged homes, and the complete disruption of road connectivity between Dalu and Baghmara.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma reviewed the situation and instructed district administrations to expedite relief efforts and restore road communication. Rescue operations led by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are underway in the most affected areas, such as the Silkigre Primary Health Centre (PHC), which requires urgent assistance.

Many areas, including Reserve Gittim, Modoltila, Rishipara, Hawakhana, and others, are still being assessed by teams from the Tura Municipal Board (TMB) and the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

The continuous rainfall, which began around midnight, has caused significant damage. On the first day, three civilians lost their lives in Dalu, West Garo Hills, while seven others were buried under a landslide in Hatiasia Songma village in South Garo Hills.

District authorities have been directed to release compensation to the affected families, while the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) continues search and rescue operations. The heavy rainfall has also created flood-like conditions in Assam's Mankachar region, where several villages have been inundated by rainwater flowing from the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya.
