October 7 Attacks Remembered Globally with Rallies and Commemoration Events

ISRAEL WAR-DAY 367: The first anniversary of the October 7 attacks by Hamas is being marked worldwide, with memorials, pro- and anti-Israel demonstrations, and ongoing conflict. Israel, grappling with the aftermath of the atrocities, faces two significant challenges: internal divisions highlighted by separate commemoration events, and the ongoing wars it is fighting on multiple fronts. On October 5, General Michael Kurilla, head of the US Central Command, visited Israel to discuss these high-stakes issues, including how Israel will respond to recent missile attacks from Iran.

The anniversary coincides with Israel’s escalating conflict with Lebanon and Gaza. In Lebanon, Israel continues ground operations and airstrikes, aimed at weakening Hizbullah’s stronghold. In Gaza, violence persists, with a humanitarian crisis worsening as more than 40,000 Gazans have lost their lives. On October 5, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) launched another operation in Jabalia, targeting Hamas fighters in the refugee camp. As tensions rise, another attack on Israel could potentially mark the anniversary with further violence.

Memorials and protests erupted across Europe over the weekend. In Berlin, pro-Israeli demonstrators marched near the Brandenburg Gate, carrying banners reading “Against all antisemitism” and chanting “Free Gaza from Hamas” and “Bring them home,” referring to the hostages still held in Gaza. The demonstration saw hundreds of participants waving Israeli flags and singing songs of peace.

In Paris, thousands gathered for a Jewish memorial event to honor the victims of the October 7 attacks. Speakers and artists paid tribute to the lives lost and expressed solidarity with those still held captive. Ayelet Samerano, whose son Jonathan was kidnapped and killed during the attacks, spoke of unity and resilience, declaring, “Together we are strong… no enemy will bring us down.”

Similar events took place in London, where thousands gathered in Hyde Park, waving Israeli flags and chanting “Bring them home.” The event was organized by various Jewish organizations in collaboration with the Israeli embassy.

As the anniversary date approaches, the world remains divided on the conflict, with ongoing violence in the region and international protests highlighting the enduring impact of the October 7 attacks.
