Rising Tensions: Israel's Actions in Gaza and Lebanon Spark International Concern

Send Push

The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed concern that Israel's actions may be leading to significant destruction and displacement of the Palestinian population in northern Gaza. Areas like Jabalia, Beit Hanoon, and Beit Lahiya have been particularly affected, with reports indicating that over 87 Palestinians have been killed or are missing following an Israeli attack that destroyed an entire residential block.

In a related escalation, Israeli missile strikes hit southern Beirut, Lebanon, resulting in at least 16 casualties on Saturday, as confirmed by Lebanon's Health Ministry. Additionally, an Israeli bulldozer demolished a UN peacekeeping observation tower in southern Lebanon, further straining the operations of the UN's Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Since the conflict intensified on October 7, 2023, Gaza has witnessed a staggering toll, with at least 42,603 people killed and nearly 100,000 injured due to Israeli military actions. In contrast, Hamas's assault on southern Israel resulted in the deaths of at least 1,139 individuals, with over 200 reported as captives.

In an attempt to navigate the ongoing tensions, Israel has reportedly sent a list of demands to the White House regarding a potential ceasefire in Lebanon. According to information from various Israeli and US officials, the document includes requests for unrestricted Israeli air force operations in Lebanon and the ability for the Israeli military to conduct operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. These demands, however, contradict a UN Security Council resolution that supports the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers in enforcing a ceasefire.

One US official noted that it is unlikely that either Lebanon or the international community would accept conditions that could severely compromise Lebanon's sovereignty.
