Nabarangpur: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for a 12-hour bandh at Raighar in Odisha’s Nabarangpur on Monday to protest the death of a female B.Sc. Nursing student of the district who reportedly died by suicide following alleged harassment.
The opposition party plans to observe the shutdown from 6 am to 6 pm to protest the incident and demand compensation for the family of the deceased, identified as Kalpana Ray of Dumurimunda village in the district.
As per reports, Kalpana, a second-year BSc Nursing student in Jeypore consumed pesticide on July 17 after constant harassment by a youth, Satyajit Sarkar. The youth was allegedly obsessed with her and had been troubling her for quite some time.
Kalpana was reportedly assaulted by Satyajit in public on July 13. Though she approached the police, the matter was resolved informally. On July 15, she filed an FIR against him, but no immediate action was taken.
Meanwhile, Satyajit allegedly circulated photographs of Kalpana and her boyfriend following which she reportedly consumed pesticide fearing humiliation.
Kalpana was first treated at a local hospital and later shifted to a private facility in Raipur. On July 21, she was brought back to Umerkote hospital and subsequently transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where she died on Saturday during treatment.
Based on a complaint by the family of the deceased, police have arrested Satyajit and another youth in connection with the incident.
