Arrest made after Australia cricketers 'touched inappropriately' during Women's World Cup

Cricket Australia have confirmed that two members of their Women's Cricket World Cup team were "approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe" in India. Additional deputy commissioner of police (crime) in Indore, Rajesh Dandotiya, has said, "the accused was identified through CCTV footage and arrested."

Dandotiya told BBC News Hindi: "The accused followed the women players for some distance and kept passing lewd remarks. He then moved his motorcycle closer... making inappropriate physical contact."

Cricket Australia's statement reads: "We can confirm two members of the Australian Women's Team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore. The matter was reported by team security to police who are handling the matter."

Thursday was a day off for Australia after playing England at Holkar Stadium in Indore. Their final match of the league phase, on Saturday, was also held at the same venue.

Indore is home to the Madhya Pradesh men's and women's cricket teams. They were formerly known as Holkar.

Australia previously played their first match of the tournament there against New Zealand. The White Ferns also faced South Africa there earlier this month, with England beating India there last weekend.

The Southern Stars have already qualified for the semi-finals, with the knockout stages taking place across the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The latter will also host next Sunday's final.

Australia are seven-time world champions and won the last edition, which New Zealand hosted, in 2022. The team won every match at that tournament, beating England by 71 runs in the final, and remain unbeaten this year, with the only game they did not win, versus Sri Lanka, ending in a no-result after play was not possible due to rain in Colombo.
