BBC bosses have broken silence on reports that Call the Midwife is set to end, confirming the beloved show will return for a 16th series, although they've yet to pencil in a date.
They issued a statement to calm any concerns: "The BBC would like to reassure fans that Call The Midwife will remain at the heart of the BBC for years to come. As previously announced, there are two Christmas specials, a new series, a film and prequel series, before a sixteenth series in due course. Call the Midwife isn't going anywhere."
The much-anticipated 15th series is slated to hit screens in January next year, with a cinematic release and a WWII prequel series also in the pipeline, showcasing younger versions of the cherished characters.
Speculation had been rife that the series is coming to an end, but insiders hint that the future could see Call the Midwife follow Downton Abbey's lead, potentially transitioning to film specials post-TV run.
A source told The Sun: "The intention is certainly for Call the Midwife to come back to the TV in one way or another. It could be that it returns as specials, rather than a full series, but we just don't know yet. But it will be back! Fans haven't seen the last of their favourite characters yet."
The cast are currently under contract until November, with question marks around potential renewals to accommodate next year's filming of the already-confirmed movie. An insider disclosed: "In terms of getting the cast back, production will work it all out before the end of filming next year."
Reports first broke yesterday that the beloved BBC series would be coming to an end, with an inside telling Daily Star: "After years of drama and countless births, Call The Midwife is coming to an end. The team have decided it's time to draw the show to a close and bow out. This is the last we'll see of these much-loved characters. Storylines will tie up a lot of loose ends."
