In a tragic turn of events, a teenager has been left in a coma and with one leg amputated following a harrowing 100mph 'hit-and-run' incident in Bradford. The youth, identified locally as 17 year old Kayden, was involved in the catastrophic collision on Monday, September 16, shortly after 8.30pm.
According to reports, Kayden had been on a trip to Tesco with friends when a vehicle, allegedly evading police pursuit, barrelled through a red light at high speed, striking him with immense force.
A family friend, Michaela Petty, revealed the devastating circumstances on a GoFundMe page set up for Kayden, detailing the moment the car hurtled into him.
West Yorkshire Police have disclosed that officers noticed a speeding car in Bradford around 8.25pm and initiated a chase. However, they lost sight of the vehicle, only to find Kayden grievously injured on Halifax Road, the apparent victim of the fleeing car which did not stop at the scene.
The young man, who is autistic, was urgently transported to Leeds General Infirmary (LGI), where he remains in a "critical condition" and comatose due to the severity of his injuries. In an effort to save his life, surgeons performed two operations, resulting in the amputation of one of Kayden's legs up to the thigh, reports the Mirror.
Michaela revealed the harrowing details of the incident, saying: "Kayden is still in hospital, in a coma and still in a critical condition due to his injuries. He's been in theatre twice for major life changing operations, which one led to him having to have his leg off up to his thigh. Carole's family and friends all count there lucky stars Kayden is still here today. However he will have to be in hospital for weeks until he recovers it's going to be one hell of a journey for his family and friends."
A close family friend confirmed the devoted presence of Kayden's mother during this ordeal: "Kayden is currently in an induced coma in the LGI with his mum Carole by his side."
The police investigation following the serious incident on Wednesday has resulted in a 24 year old man being apprehended on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Additionally, a 33 year old individual was detained on Tuesday on similar charges as well as fleeing an accident scene.
Parallel to these developments, another man at the age of 33 finds himself arrested under suspicion of aiding an offender. All three suspects have since been released on bail while pending further investigation.
In an act of accountability, West Yorkshire Police has taken the initiative to refer itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
