Motorists have been left stunned after realising a hidden button found in many petrol and diesel cars could save their lives in an emergency.

TikTok expert @masterdriver666 showed off the "life-saving button" with road users able to escape their vehicle in "just one click".

The latch is located on the inside of the boot and easily accessible for motorists desperate to escape. Road users have to simply pull down their rear seats to access the boot and click the button which will pop open the boot in seconds.

The TikTok influencer revealed the hack alongside a range of safety tips they claim 99 percent of people don't know.

@masterdriver66 explained: "Don't worry when you're stuck in your car and can't get you. Actually, taking out the car is very simple.

"Put down the rear seats first, climb into your trunk. There is a small black mechanism on the trunk door panel. This is your life-saving switch. You can open the trunk with just one click. Have you learned it?"

The clip has so far proved popular with more than 23,000 views and more than 2,400 likes since it was uploaded.

It is believed the simple switch could help drivers escape if their vehicle fell into dense water such as a lake or river.

This is because it could be difficult to open doors due to the water pressure making it hard for road users to escape.

However, Express readers have previously warned the boot button will not offer much more help.

Express reader @howlr said: "If trapped in a car underwater, open the window, let the water in and either then try the door or get out through the window, rather than drown trying to open the tailgate!"

@AlHamilton added: "So you can't open the door because of the water pressure holding it shut why would the water pressure on the boot not stop you opening that?"

Motorists making an escape may wish to move their steering wheel quickly out of the way before jumping out of their seats.

@master_driver666 also revealed how road users could adjust the vital tool with a simple lever located just next to the driver's legs.

They explained: "Look, there is a small wrench under the steering wheel. Press it. Now you can freely adjust the height of the steering wheel."
