Penistone in is the highest market town in the country - and it's that fact that its slightly unfortunate name stems from. Originally called Pengeston, then later Peningston, the name is made up of the Brittonic word penn (meaning a head, end, or height) with the Old English suffix ing and the word tun (meaning a farmstead or village).
journalist Andrew Robinson visited to explore the village, heading there on the three-carriage Penistone line from Huddersfield to Sheffield, and was intrigued by what he found. Andrew "quickly discovered it's a fascinating place to explore if you love history", with "signs for the Trans Pennine Trail and an information board about how steelmaking helped balloon Penistone's population in the late 19th century" available the moment visitors hopped off the train. The local fascination with 'railway mania' was evident, alongside a tribute sculpture to both male and female steelworkers and a poignant memorial to the railway workers lost in the .
Andrew took to the little town to explore the variety of eateries, from cosy cafes and welcoming pubs to traditional fish and chip shops.
Following the advice of some locals, the Yorkshire Live journalist paid a visit to Cafe Creme, located on the High Street, where he indulged in a mouth-watering breakfast burrito stuffed with sausage, beans, mushrooms, cheese, hash browns, bacon, and scrambled eggs (£10), accompanied by a cappuccino.
The buzzing atmosphere left him feeling "like an extra in EastEnders as everyone in the cafe seemed to know one another and they were sharing all the gossip".
Karen Harrison, Cafe Creme's owner, pointed out some must-see attractions around town, including the 'sheep sculpture trail', a notable church, and a peaceful park.
The town features an assortment of unique shops, cafes, and establishments, including The Wise Donkey book and toy shop, the library, and a variety of eateries.
Other catches included Pride and Groom pet shop, the Spread Eagle pub, Tap and Brew House, Harrington's Butchers, The Arthouse Cafe, Holme Coffee House, All the Good Makers Yorkshire shop, multiple fish and chip shops, and even a lingerie boutique called Frillies - a list that barely scratches the surface.
St John's Church boasts an impressive Grade I listing, and its 1,000-year history cements its exceptional historical significance.
Penistone residents carry considerable pride for their town, evidenced by their extensive knowledge of its history. Take Gill Milner, a former Mayor, for instance, who said of the town: "There's quite a lot of history here. We had a lady visit from Canada who was tracing her family name, Hinchliffe. We do get historians tracing their family trees. We also get cyclists."
Gill extolled the virtues of the local market on Thursdays and Saturdays, where a wonderland of stalls awaits: "There's a biscuit stall, card stall, shoes, an egg man, a cheese man, a fishmonger."
The town's conviviality seems to be its hallmark, a sentiment echoed by locals Mark and Mandy: "It's beautiful and everyone is friendly."
And of course, not to be missed, as recommended by almost every resident, is the Paramount Cinema, or "pictures" as it's affectionately known - a quaint attraction drawing crowds from near and far.
Andrew wrote of the place: "It's got a bar and during the intermission, you can grab a beer or an ice cream like in the old days. Watch out for the sheep on the way in."
The nearby Watermeadows Park is encircled by impeccably manicured gardens and sky-high conifers and hosts a quaint river, making it an idyllic location for a picnic, dog walking, or simply letting the kids frolic in the open air.

Reluctantly tracing his footsteps back to the station, Andrew lamented: "I'd probably only scraped the surface of what Penistone has to offer."
On the train platform, John, a 90-year-old Penistone Grammar School alumnus now residing in the North East, chatted with Andrew, remarking: "It's a peaceful place. When the weather is like this, it's really nice."
Andrew's verdict following his visit? "It's a 5/5 town."
