Former singer once apologised for a picture taken of him balancing on a balcony ledge, calling himself "irresponsible".
The resurfaced apology comes after after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, according to police there. He was 31.
The photo was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, but was since taken down.
The then 20-year-old tweeted: "You may have seen a photo of me today taken on top of a building. I regret being there and having a photo taken.
"It was a stupid and irresponsible thing to do. I am sorry, and do not endorse any fans trying to repeat this, as it is extremely dangerous."
The chilling message has reappeared after capital police said they were called to the hotel in the capital's leafy Palermo neighbourhood where they were notified of an "aggressive man who could be under the effects of drugs and alcohol."
Emergency workers confirmed the death of the singer, who was reportedly found in the hotel's interior patio.
Earlier this month Payne had attended the concert of his former bandmate Niall Horan in Buenos Aires. The musician has been open in the media about struggling with addiction and spending time in a rehabilitation facility.
Earlier on Wednesday (October 16), Payne had appeared to post on Snapchat about his trip in Argentina, talking about riding horses, playing polo, and looking forward to returning home to see his dog.
"It's a lovely day here in Argentina," he said in the video.
Payne rose to global fame as part of the since-disbanded pop band One Direction, alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, who appeared on The X Factor.
The singer shared a YouTube video in 2023 in which he revealed he had been sober for six months after spending nearly 100 days at a Louisiana rehab facility.
When he was 29, Payne said he had "more of a grip on life" now that he's taken time for himself after becoming "somebody who I didn't really recognize anymore."
One Direction announced they were taking a hiatus in 2015. Payne later released his debut solo album in 2019 titled "LP1." In March, Payne released his LP "Teardrops."
Payne had a son, Bear, born in 2017, who he shared with former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole.
