starlet Victor Musa scored a remarkable six goals as the Red Devils' Under-18s thrashed Leeds 13-1. The 18-year-old bagged each of his strikes in a thumping first-half performance by Adam Lawrence's side.
Ruben Amorim's first-team forwards have struggled for goals this season. However, the Portuguese boss almost certainly has some talented players coming through the youth ranks. Chido Obi, who joined from Arsenal last summer, has already made his senior debut after impressing at academy level. It seems Musa might be the next off the production line.
He scored his first goal after only two minutes and could not stop finding the net over the next 45 minutes. Musa scored a hat-trick inside 15 minutes and added his fourth in the 17th minute. His fifth arrived in the 25th minute but he was forced to wait a relatively lengthy 20 minutes by his own standards for his sixth.
The young Red Devils were 9-0 ahead at half-time with Jim Thwaites' hat-trick adding to Musa's heroics. United added another four in the second half but Musa was not on the scoresheet.
He did get an assist, laying off James Bailey's goal as United reached double figures. Daniel Armer struck the 11th after Leeds' Kenneth Mensah scored a consolatory goal for the visitors. Fourteen-year-old debutant JJ Gabriel - the youngest player to feature for United's U18s - scored twice as the clock ticked into added time.
United are understood to have high hopes for Musa. A left-footed forward who can operate across the front line, he has represented both England and Spain at U16 level. He was born in the Spanish municipality of Tudela.
It may not be long before Musa and the highly thought of Obi are shining in United's first team together. Amorim's forwards have struggled in front of goal this season. Centre-forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have scored only three goals, with the latter often looking more comfortable in a slightly deeper role.
One of them will need to be on form if United are to get anything from tomorrow's Manchester derby. Amorim might have been tempted to thrust one of his young stars into the team, but insists he does not have the time necessary to help their development.
The United head coach said: "Sometimes you don't have time and you should have time for these kids to develop. I will not have the time. We have to get it right, fast."
