Matheus Cunha concerns emerge just days after impressive Man Utd debut vs Arsenal

Michael Owen has hailed new Manchester United signing Matheus Cunha after his eye-catching debut against Arsenal, but shared concerns about the Brazilian's attitude. Cunha rivalled David Raya as the best player on the pitch at Old Trafford on Sunday, offering encouragement about Ruben Amorim's Premier League-proven recruitment drive this summer.

United triggered his £62.5million release clause at Wolves to start an attacking overhaul that also involved Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko's arrivals. But while Owen could not fault Cunha's talent, the former Red Devils striker waved a red flag about question marks over his behaviour at Molineux.

"I think Cunha has got a little bit of magic about him. I love watching him play. The first moment I set eyes on him for Wolves, I just thought: 'Oh wow, he's a talented player'," Owen told AskGamblers.

"I really rate him, and I don't blame Manchester United for getting him. I think he's so talented. My only question mark is his attitude.

"He gets sent off a lot, he waves his arms a lot, and you've already got someone like that alongside him in Bruno Fernandes.

"From a talent point of view, he's absolutely there. And maybe being at Manchester United, being at a huge club like that, might put some manners on him.

"You can't go around grabbing people's glasses off them after a game, getting sent off, arguing with referees, and causing fights on numerous occasions like he did at Wolves.

"But when you're the outstanding player and when you've been carrying the club, when all that pressure's on you and all those different things, then you can understand it a bit."

Owen's comments have raised eyebrows, though. While Cunha was involved in multiple spats at Wolves, he has only ever received one career red card.

He also faced a two-match suspension and £80,000 fine after snatching a security guard's glasses after the final whistle of Wolves' 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town last December.

Owen added that the natural increase in attention Cunha will receive as a United player will require him to kick that feistiness out of his game.

He added: "If he irons that out, I think he could be a brilliant signing and as I say, going to Manchester United might put manners on him."

Cunha's feedback was universally positive after the opening game of the Premier League season, despite a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.

But, as the campaign progresses, there will undoubtedly be moments to test his temper, where he can prove those question marks wrong.
