Migrant camp fury on billionaire's row as travellers drink, gamble and poo in street

Migrants reacted furiously after being approached by the Express and MP Chris Philp at an illegal camp on London's billionaire's row. It comes after they were previously caught drinking vodka, gambling and defecating in the street.

A video shows reporter Zak Garner-Purkis approaching a group of men at the camp alongside the Shadow Home Secretary. After being asked what they were doing in the area, the men initially ignored the question before engaging. One man said they were from Romania and Bulgaria. Another man then intervened, shouting, "Go! Leave," before standing up. He continued to point and shout at the reporter and politician.

Mr Philp asked one man: "Do you work? What's your job?" But he couldn't answer the question and turned away from the camera.

The migrants then tried to divert attention to others in the camp. Another man can then be seen clearing litter left at the camp as the group became increasingly disgruntled.

The camp, which consisted of around 30 people, was made up of 19 tents on the famous Park Lane, opposite the Hilton Hotel and yards from Hyde Park. The migrants, who are mostly eastern European, have now been evicted following an investigation by the Express.

Bailiffs swooped on the illegal camp at around 5am on Thursday morning (June 26) to move the occupants on. The group previously admitted that they don't work and were pictured hanging up laundry and eating off tables pitched up in the area.

The Express saw some of the migrants gambling with money while one woman was grimly pictured pooing on the grass. The residents even begged for money, with one asking for £50 by bank transfer.

Reporter Jon King visited the camp on Tuesday (June 24) and was told by one woman to "F*** off". She claimed she had spent a month at the camp and was waiting for a home.

Diana, a woman at the camp, said, "We don't steal because it brings trouble. We beg. We beg." She added that the group speaks English but is fluent in Italian and is looking for cleaning jobs.

Diana also said Transport for London (TFL) officers visited the camp daily and did nothing to move them on. She explained: "Police visit every day but don't move us. Police check we have food and water and no problem."

One officer told the Express they were there to do "welfare checks" because of the hot weather. They then got back into a van and drove off.

However, the migrants were finally evicted on Thursday morning. A Westminster City Council spokesperson said: "We're pleased that TfL has been able to clear the latest encampment on Park Lane. Council officers were on hand to support - removing waste and pointing those displaced to appropriate services.

"We've always said that the central reservation of Park Lane is not a safe place for anybody to live and the anti-social behaviour associated with this encampment was unacceptable.

"This is the third such clearance in the last 12 month and we share local people's impatience for a long term solution to the persistent issues at this site. TFL have committed to working with us to achieve this."
