Mould can easily spread in homes during the chillier seasons, but there's a straightforward method to prevent it without resorting spending a lot of money. Homes are more susceptible to mould at this time of year as we tend to keep windows shut and dry laundry indoors, leading to a build-up of condensation.
Condensation is moisture that forms when warm air meets a cold surface, and if not wiped away, it can eventually turn into mould since spores thrive in damp environments. A simple solution to combat dampness is using a dehumidifier, but these units can be pricey. However, an expert from Happy House Plants has revealed a more cost-effective way to ward off mould - certain plants can purify the air and inhibit spore growth.
The expert stated: "Getting a dehumidifier may be an option and have some effects, but houseplants are natural, more effective, and prettier alternative to remove that indoor humidity."
How plants prevent mould growth inside a home?Typically, tropical houseplants grow on the rainforest floor, where they've adapted to absorb moisture from the air, as dense tree foliage usually blocks most rainfall.
When these plants are brought indoors, they'll absorb any excess humidity, preventing condensation, dampness and consequently, mould growth.
Monstera
Also known as Swiss cheese plants thanks to their leaves, monsteras are amongst the most popular houseplants, yet few realise their ability to extract moisture from the air.
These plants thrive in indirect sunlight and humid environments, making them ideal for bathrooms or kitchens where they can absorb surplus steam.
Areca Palms
Areca palms are excellent natural dehumidifiers, absorbing a significant amount of humidity. They're also known for their toxin-removing properties, which can prevent spore growth.
This stunning plant emits a great deal of oxygen, making it perfect for bedrooms to aid better sleep. It's relatively easy to maintain, provided it's kept away from windowsills and not overwatered.
Aglaonema Pink Stars
These attractive plants, known for their vibrant pink and green leaves, not only brighten up a home but also absorb excess moisture.
They require minimal maintenance and are perfect for novice houseplant owners as they don't need much sunlight. You can place it anywhere in your home and with occasional watering, it should stay healthy throughout the colder seasons.
