If you love your TV, there's a good chance you are partial to a brilliant period drama. Brits especially love sitting down to enjoy thrilling storylines inspired by some of history's most fascinating time periods, and one show has won the hearts of TV enthusiasts.

In fact, some have even said it is better than Game of Thrones. The Last Kingdom is a British historical drama television series created and developed by Stephen Butchard. It first aired on the BBC in 2015.

It spanned five seasons and captivated viewers in the process.

An adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's The Saxon Stories novels, the story follows Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon), who was born a Saxon but raised as a Dane after a raid on his village.

Diving into the world of Anglo-Saxon England, the story follows Uhtred as he straddles the divide between two very different cultures.

It's safe to say viewers were impressed.

One review on IMDb hailed the show as "everything Game of Thrones wasn't and added: "Great story arc from a fascinating and horrific period to be alive. Just about every actor smashes it out of the park."

Another reviewer gave the show a 10/10, adding: "The characters and story lines are on point and unlike Vikings every season is brilliant. On top of the brilliant production the sound track fits perfectly and gives me goose bumps each time I watch.

"Hats off to everyone involved this is by far my favourite series with the ending to the film (Seven King's must die) finishing this epic story in the most perfect way possible. If you haven't watched it yet stop floundering and get watching. You won't regret it!"

The Last Kingdom is available to watch on Netflix.
